Standing up: Canada’s leadership in global LGBTI funding

Égides, Dignity Network Canada and Global Philanthropy Project

Donor governments have a key role to play in supporting the vital work of LGBTI communities worldwide. In 2021-2022, Canada ranked third among donor governments for global LGBTI funding with US$23.1 million committed.

Global Philanthropy Project, together with its partners Égides – International Francophone Alliance for Equality and Diversities and Dignity Network Canada, publish “Standing up: Canada’s leadership in global LGBTI funding”. This report provides specific recommendations for the Government of Canada to further its commitment to LGBTI rights worldwide.

The recommendations are:

  • Build on the success of the 2SLGBTQI+ International Assistance Program (IAP), launched by Canada in 2019 with three specific, dedicated funding windows.
  • Expand Canada’s LGBTI funding to at least CA$20 million per year, so that funding for LGBTI movements is integrated across a number of Canadian international assistance key priorities.
  • Institutionalize LGBTI issues within Global Affairs Canada, to strengthen LGBTI inclusion within the strategies, policies and practices in the long term

The report was launched in Montréal on August 7th, 2024, during the Montréal Pride/Fierté celebrations.
